Jim Peterson is a World and Olympic figure skating coach and choreographer with a passion for creativity and the arts. He has twice been awarded the Developmental Coach of the Year “Edi” award jointly from USFS and the PSA. From 2009 through 2019, Peterson has coached his Senior pair teams to 11 consecutive podium finishes with 13 US National medals along with numerous Junior, Novice, and Intermediate national medalists. Peterson has trained as a skater and coach with many top pair and singles coaches including Tamara Moskvina, Nina Mozer, Frank Caroll, Kerry Leitch and Peter Oppegard. He has a strong education in ballet and uses it's organization and attention to detail to enhance his coaching and choreography.
Peterson has a musical background as well and has edited music from the regional level skater through the Olympian. He enjoys finding expressive ways to enhance a program with unique musical choices and editing. Peterson has 18 years experience with the pole harness and finds it a wonderful tool for skaters to learn and develop the more difficult jumps and throws without the worry of injury. For the past decade, Peterson has team coached with his former student and Olympian Amanda Evora and enjoys the balance of yin and yang in their coaching dynamic.
This coaching partnership is especially advantageous for pair teams as both partners are able to hear the male and female points of view from the coaching perspective. Jim Peterson and Amanda Evora are excited and inspired to be making the Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Canton, MI their new training home and look forward to educating and training skaters of all levels towards their skating goals and dreams.
